After he removed the central leader, the tree responded by producing a vigorous side branch that became the new framework of the tree. Since then, it has developed thicker wood, larger leaves, stronger growth, and its first meaningful flowering period.

The avocado still requires protection from extreme heat and drying winds. Cedar uses light shade cloth during summer and protects newly exposed branches from sunburn. He has also attempted to graft Mexican avocado genetics onto the tree, hoping to introduce additional vigor, pollination potential, or climate tolerance.

Several avocado seedlings and young potted trees are also growing throughout the property. Some were planted intentionally, while others sprouted from discarded seeds. Even if these seedlings never produce exceptional fruit, they may become valuable rootstock for future grafting experiments.

Several trees have already demonstrated how dramatically growth can change after structural pruning. Weak central leaders were removed, allowing stronger side branches to become the permanent framework of the tree. Grafting is equally important. Cedar continually adds new scions from other growers, allowing one healthy tree to become home to several cultivars.
